The 17th Royal Fusiliers battalion arrived in France in June 1915 as part of 99 Brigade, 33rd Division and in December 1915, they transferred to 5 Brigade, 2nd Division. On 2nd March, 1916 they left their billets at Fosse 10, a mining village east of Bully Grenay and moved into the front line in the Calonne sector where they remained until relieved on 19th March. John Sharland died from wounds on 17th March and is buried in a nearby cemetery but it is not known on what exact date he was wounded. |
